A strong composition and good DOF make all the difference in this image. Texture is important in conveying the temporary tin boathouse...

Good sepia colouring - nice warmth - and I am guessing a graduation applied since the sky does have a bit of extra depth at the top? T...

So everything this week has been related to sweeping ... first I found out I can make brushes in GIMP and wow have I had fun.  Now okay they are not to a shareable standard yet but I have had such a cool time making brushes to distress my photographs and clear overlays.

So then that get me started on digital scrapbooking - which I have always found tedious  until I used GIMP ... so I went right ahead and swept everything else important to one side and concentrated on making layouts - that resulted in a brush to create a torn edge to the 12 x 12 pages.

That in turn got me to spend more time looking at mounting my photographs for the gallery, which took me full circle to look for GIMP brushes ... and I love these from Redheadstock [link]

I used a couple of these for textures on mounts - using dodge or burn got fabulous results ... like a watermark effect.  But that didn't satisfy me so I had to go make a brush of my logo ... created from one of my photographs and text added I am really quite pleased with that.

Finally all this creativity has given my poor computer a hammering and GIMP was starting to groan as I added mounts to photographs and wanted to add bevels and so on ... so I am just running software to do a clean sweep and tidy up of the PC.

... and all because I have had flu and had to rest - but my mind doesn't do resting so I had to keep it occupied ... actually getting this creative buzz has given my head a bit of a spring clean too

Okay well to start with I hate to be the wrong side of the camera ... especially when someone else has hold of it and is enticing me to "say cheese" ... so you get a self portrait from my phone camera, softened with GIMP ... that's it ... almost me!

I was written off in Art at school as being unable to draw ... I have crafted things all my life - scrapbooks, greeting cards, textiles ... and at the centre of all this creativity has been my photography, from my Kodak Instamatic to my current collection of 4 different cameras.

No flashy gear; I am on my second manual SLR ... my much loved Chinon gave up after many years service so I bought a Centon DF-300 (being practical it used the same lenses and was cost effective enough to afford to add an extra lens). I also like square format and for landscapes Medium format makes sense but being on a tight budget I could only run to a Lubitel 166 for experimenting.

My second digital bridge camera is my staple ... I bravely took it out of the box and straight off on holiday. I still use it on manual a great deal of the time and have the adapter to take my P-series Cokin filters.

The one camera that is with me 24/7 is my iPhone 3G ... not the best camera in the world but not bad either. I have a decent flash which I need to replace and a manual light meter which I rarely use, even with the Lubitel ... oh and I have a tripod which hardly ever comes out with me - look have you tried carrying the camera kit and restraining an excited photographic assistant pooch? no I thought not! You won't see him in many pictures but he has been sat there with me while I shot endless sunrises and has walked good miles with me to get a new landscape image.

I will probably stick mainly with photographs here but might add the odd piece of art. More importantly, I will do my best to be an active community member here and welcome constructive feedback on my work as well as questions if you're curious.

Current Residence: Kirriemuir, deviantWEAR sizing preference: what's in the label as long as it fits?, Favourite photographer: Me (if I am allowed!) My daughter otherwise ..., Operating System: Windows Vista (I know I said never but actually ...), Favourite cartoon character: Willo' the Wisp, Evil Edna, Top Cat
